Rakuten France sits at the heart of French e-commerce, being the third-largest marketplace in the country. With 13 million members and more than 10,000 professional sellers, the platform connects everyday shoppers with thousands of sellers, from users listing used books to retailers selling the latest in electronics, fashion, or home goods. Rakuten supports a full commerce experience for a high-volume community, offering marketing tools, seller services, delivery options, and a standout customer loyalty program.
With this scale and diversity come new opportunities to evolve and to fine-tune the experience for the platform users. Rakuten recognized that meeting these opportunities would require a partner ready to support that evolution. That’s why they chose to grow further with Mangopay.
Mangopay has been working alongside Rakuten France for over six years. The platform has chosen to use Mangopay’s wallets specifically for payouts and transfers, a clear example of how our programmable wallet infrastructure supports a decoupled setup, giving platforms the freedom to stay in control of how funds move across their platform, without locking them into a predefined flow.
Rakuten has customizable payout triggers based on specific business logic, such as ‘releasing payouts only if no dispute is raised within 72 hours of delivery’. This level of control means Rakuten can automate money movement in ways that match their operational needs, including dynamic fund allocation tailored to their ecosystem of high-volume sellers.
Back in 2019, just a few users were onboarded. Today, Rakuten now manages hundreds of thousands of users through Mangopay’s wallet infrastructure. A major milestone came in 2024, when more than 100,000 users, a mix of natural and legal entities, were successfully migrated from their previous PSP to Mangopay. The migration itself was a multi-phase process that involved replacing legacy systems, engaging with regulators, aligning compliance protocols, and preparing both teams to handle vast amounts of KYC data.
Rakuten needed a partner that could move fast without cutting corners. And it worked. The entire migration was completed without disruption, with users moved smoothly from one entity to another.
This wasn't only a question of volume, but also about enabling a better experience. Since the migration, Rakuten has handled a high volume of payouts through Mangopay’s infrastructure, with consistent and reliable performance. The platform now runs on a payout engine tailored to its operational needs, supporting thousands of transactions each month across a growing base of professional and individual sellers.
“Our partnership with Mangopay is built on trust and innovation. Their ability to adapt to our specific needs, especially during the migration of our users, has been instrumental in supporting our growth and providing our community with a secure, scalable payment experience.” Matthieu Denime, VP Sales and New Business, Rakuten France.
To sum it up, together we achieved:
With a high volume of transactions flowing through Mangopay and a payout engine custom-fit to Rakuten's operations, together, we're continuing to evolve and explore new opportunities that move the platform and its sellers, even further forward.
